An Artist, an Elephant, a Pirate & a pair of Pants!

Pira Phant Elephant Parade

Keith is thrilled to be one of the chosen artists to design and paint one of the elephant sculptures for the Elephant Parade.  The aims of the Elephant Parade are to attract worldwide attention and raise public awareness and support for the cause of elephant conservation. The charity raises money for various projects and organisations in 13 Asian countries.

“Pira-phant” joined a herd of elephants touring England in 2013/2014 and has proved extremely popular with children and adults alike. “Pira-phant” is colourful and designed to look cheeky with a twinkle in one eye, an eye patch over the other, tattoos, earrings, clothes too small for him and his own brand of pants – ELE-PANTS.

In March 2013, Keith was asked to judge a school competition on elephant sculpture designs at Copthorne School.

“I was impressed by the variety of designs, particularly one of an elephant dressed as a pirate designed by a seven year old boy named Yonis,” the design didn’t win the competition but it inspired the charity to create a professional artist’s version of a pirate elephant.

Keith, who designed the final product, had the elephant living in his studio for two months, where Pira-phant has become part of his family.

“After school, my children would rush home and come straight to my studio to see him. They’d sit and watch me paint and sometimes I’d also let them paint little areas.  Although we always knew he would leave us to join the Parade, it was a sad day and my children cried. I hope to get them two of the 30cm replica models to remember him. It has been a real privilege to work with the Elephant Parade and I hope to again someday.”
